Stewardship Award – Grace Episcopal Church (Syracuse)

2015may19_Grace_ChurchPACNY is pleased to present a Stewardship Award to Grace Episcopal Church, Crawford & Stearns Architects, Gary Wright, and St. Germaine & Aupperle Engineers for the rehabilitation of the Grace Episcopal Church Parish House in Syracuse.

The Grace Episcopal Church Parish House was damaged by a fire in 2013. The parish began its work by convening a “Restoration Committee” that met to envision and guide the rebuilding. Throughout the project, the committee sought to make necessary upgrades while preserving the historic character of the building. The quality of its design and construction resulted from a collaborative effort among parishioners, designers, and contractors.

PACNY would like to congratulate and thank Grace Episcopal Church for their thoughtful repair and maintenance of this historic building and community resource.

Stewardship Award – H. Lee White Marine Museum (Oswego)

2015may19_HLWMM1PACNY is pleased to present a Stewardship Award to the H. Lee White Marine Museum for their continued and exceptional efforts advocating for and preserving the maritime history, heritage, and culture of Oswego.

The H. Lee White Marine Museum has served for many years telling the history and stories of shipping on the Great Lakes. It is a center for research with many wonderful exhibits and educational programs. They are also the stewards of the LT-5, a National Historic Landmark and the only surviving tugboat from the D-Day invasion in World War II. Most recently, they achieved listing on the National Register for Derrick Boat 8, a working boat from the Erie Canal.

The museum has recently taken on their most important challenge – the restoration of the iconic Oswego Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a symbol of the community and its restoration is an important part of maintaining not only history, but also community pride. PACNY is proud to recognize the H. Lee White Marine Museum for their stewardship and advocacy for the historic resources of the City of Oswego.

Stewardship Award – Robert Branshaw/Wayne Drugs (Oswego)

2015may19_waynedrugfacade3PACNY is pleased to present this Stewardship Award to Robert Branshaw, the owner of Wayne Drug Store, in recognition of his efforts and success to restore the historic department store façade and contribute to maintaining the character and integrity of Bridge Street in Oswego.

The Wayne Drug Store façade restoration was a collaboration between Robert Branshaw and the City of Oswego Community Development Office, who obtained funding through the New York Main Street Grant Program to assist the façade rehabilitation. Crawford & Stearns Architects designed a historically sensitive façade for the building, which had been changed immensely from its original character.

PACNY applauds Robert Branshaw for reinvesting in his historic building and keeping the pharmacy as a pillar of downtown Oswego during a time when the majority of pharmacies are moving to suburban locations with drive-thru access. This project serves as a wonderful example of how downtown commercial redevelopment can be a win-win for business owners and the community.

Preservation Merit Award – The Courier Building (Syracuse)

2015may18_IMG_1894PACNY is pleased to present a Preservation Merit Award to James Prioletti (Ameriprise Financial Services), Randy Crawford (Crawford & Stearns Architects), and Gary Wright (CNY Builder Services) for the restoration and renovation of the Courier Building (Washington and Montgomery Streets) in Downtown Syracuse.

The Courier building is a rare pre-Civil War structure in Downtown Syracuse. The four-story, Greek Revival-style, brick commercial structure with a rounded corner was originally constructed in 1844 and was the home of the Courier Newspaper and printing office from 1856-1905. Historically, the building is noteworthy as the location of the infamous speech by Daniel Webster in support of the Fugitive Slave Law, which was given from the second story iron balcony in 1851.

The Courier building has been renovated with commercial offices and a planned bistro/café on the first floor and nine upscale one-bedroom apartments on the second, third, and fourth floors. The restoration project also included structural stabilization to repair a failed truss, asbestos abatement, new roofing, facade repairs, and window rehabilitation. PACNY congratulates the owner and project team for this exemplary historic preservation project.

Preservation Merit Award – Glenn Hinchey

2015may18_Glenns_PortraitPACNY is pleased to present a Preservation Merit Award to Glenn Hinchey for his significant commitment and contributions to preserving important architectural resources in the historic Hawley-Green neighborhood of Syracuse.

Since 1977, Glenn has restored numerous homes in the Hawley-Green Historic District with meticulous attention to detail, thereby retaining and ensuring the architectural integrity of the neighborhood. Some of Glenn’s restoration projects include: 304 Howard Street; 105, 117, and 118 Gertrude Street; and 314 Hawley Avenue. In addition, Glenn owns numerous additional properties in the neighborhood that he is in the process of renovating.

Glenn’s commitment to the neighborhood and its revitalization are reflected in the meticulous restorations he has completed on several properties. On behalf of the Central New York community, PACNY thanks Glenn for his dedication and craftsmanship.

Preservation Merit Award – Seaway Lofts (Oswego)

2015may18_Seaway_AfterPACNY is pleased to present a Preservation Merit Award to Bentham Foundation, Sutton Real Estate Company, Edgemere Development, MacKnight Architects, Rich and Gardner Construction, and Saralinda Hooker for the adaptive reuse, rehabilitation and preservation of the former Brosemer Brewery (Seaway Supply Building) in Oswego.

The Brewery embodies the distinctive characteristics of later 19th century industrial architecture and is one of the few riverfront industrial buildings of that era that remain in Oswego. The building had been vacant for 10 years and was a blighting influence on the neighborhood. It was restored and stabilized in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s historic preservation standards, melding historic and contemporary elements including exposed columns, beams, molding, doors, masonry/brick, hand written signage, and the wood vaulted ceiling of the hops drying room to create 26 distinctive, affordable, workforce apartments.

PACNY congratulates the Seaway Lofts project team for this exemplary adaptive reuse project.

Jasena R. Foley Education Award – Michael Stanton

2015may17_MikeStanton204X5PACNY is proud to present the Jasena R. Foley Education Award to Michael Stanton for his longstanding role as a facilitator of public discourse regarding historic preservation, community planning, and public policy in Central New York.

Mike Stanton has stimulated important discussions while maintaining the PACNY list serve, engaging hundreds of preservationists, architects, planners and the general public in historic preservation and urban issues. As a Board Member for PACNY, Mike also developed the Syracuse Then and Now website, providing easy access to history and historic architecture about historic Syracuse. He has also been an outspoken neighborhood advocate as the longtime leader of the Southeast University Neighborhood Association. His contribution has been essential to the success of the local historic preservation movement over the past fifteen years.

What is perhaps most remarkable about Mike’s contributions is that he has committed all of this time and energy on an entirely volunteer basis. Our community is truly indebted to Mike Stanton.

Wilma T. Auer Award – Elizabeth Crawford

2015may17_Beth_CrawfordWith tremendous appreciation and gratitude, PACNY is pleased to present the Wilma T. Auer Award to Elizabeth Crawford for her service and outstanding contributions to PACNY.

Beth Crawford has been a driving force as a volunteer, Board member and officer of PACNY for nearly 20 years. Beth served many years as the organization’s Vice President and served as Chair or Member on the Preservation, Events, and Awards Committees. Some of her many notable events and contributions included organizing a reenactment of the Jerry Rescue (at Clinton Square) and dramatization of abolitionist themes (at Grace Episcopal Church). In addition, Beth worked many hours as a volunteer on the research and design of the Syracuse Freedom Trail sign project.

Beth completed a term of service on the PACNY Board of Directors this past year. We cannot adequately express our gratitude to Beth for her leadership and contributions over the past 2 decades, and look forward to her ongoing involvement with future PACNY endeavors. Thank you!

Preservation Merit Award – Christine Capella-Peters

2015may17_Capella_PetersPACNY is thrilled to recognize Christine Capella-Peters with a Preservation Merit Award for her significant commitment to and advocacy for preserving historic resources throughout the Central New York community.

Chris Capella-Peters’ career in historic preservation began with a faculty position at SUNY-ESF, during which she helped establish the Urban Design Studio for Landscape Architecture students. She is a nationally renowned expert on Historic Landscape Preservation and was co-editor of “The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes”, published in 1996 by the National Park Service. However, Chris is perhaps best known because of her position at the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, from which she recently retired at the end of last year. In her role at NYSOPRHP, Chris reviewed and provided technical guidance to historic property owners, stewards and managers, landscape architects, preservation planners, architects, contractors and project reviewers on countless projects.

On behalf of the Central New York community, PACNY would like to thank Chris Capella-Peters for her longstanding stewardship and leadership for the historic resources in our community.
