A Residential Architecture Primer (1880-1940): Introducing the New Westcott-University Neighborhood National Register Historic District

We are honored to welcome Dr. Samuel D. Gruber, an esteemed historian and preservationist, as our guest speaker. Dr. Gruber will share his expertise on the newly designated Westcott-University Neighborhood National Register Historic District. As the lead researcher for the district’s nomination, he will highlight the architectural diversity and historical significance of this “streetcar suburb,” along with the community-driven preservation efforts and its lasting impact on residents and our local heritage.

Dr. Samuel D. Gruber is an art and architectural historian, historic preservationist, and consultant and adviser to organizations, institutions, private foundations, government agencies, and individuals. He is President of the Arts & Crafts Society of Central New York and past President of PACNY. Locally, he has also carried out cultural resource surveys for the cities of Syracuse and Binghamton. In addition to his blog, “My Central New York,” Sam has written two books about synagogue architecture, scores of articles and book chapters about art and architectural topics, and he has recently curated several online exhibitions. He holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in art and architectural history from Columbia University, a B.A. from Princeton University in Medieval Studies, and a certificate in surveying and measured drawing from Cornell University, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Rome.

We look forward to seeing you there as we reflect on PACNY’s accomplishments over the past year and share the exciting opportunities ahead!
